10 Things First-Time Cruisers Wish They Knew (Before They Booked)

I have planned cruises for solo travelers, couples, and the one person in the family group chat who somehow got voluntold to plan the whole reunion at sea. And no matter who I’m working with, I hear a version of the same thing after their first cruise: “I wish someone had told me this before I booked.”

So I’m telling you now.

Here are the ten things I always make sure my clients know before they ever step foot on a ship, because a little insider knowledge is the difference between a good cruise and a great one.

1. The cruise line matters more than the price

Not all cruise lines are built the same, and the cheapest fare isn’t always the best value. Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Disney, Norwegian, Celebrity, Virgin Voyages, AmaWaterways: each one has its own personality, its own onboard vibe, and its own type of traveler it’s built for. A ship that’s perfect for a family with young kids is not the ship you want for a quiet anniversary getaway. I always start by asking what kind of experience you actually want, then I match you to the line that delivers it.

2. Your cabin category changes everything

Interior, oceanview, balcony, suite: it’s not just about the view. Cabin location affects motion, noise, walking distance to elevators, and sometimes even your access to exclusive areas of the ship. I’ve had clients who booked on their own end up under the nightclub. You don’t want that surprise on night one.

3. Embarkation day is not the day to wing it

Boarding a cruise ship involves more moving parts than people expect: check-in windows, luggage drop, security, and boarding groups. Showing up without a plan means standing in a line you didn’t need to stand in. 4. “All-inclusive” on a cruise doesn’t always mean what you think

Your fare covers your cabin, your meals in the main dining areas, and most onboard entertainment. It usually does not cover specialty restaurants, certain drink packages, WiFi, gratuities, or excursions. Knowing what’s actually included before you book means no surprise charges once you’re onboard.

5. Group cabins need to be booked together, and early

If you’re planning a trip for your family, your bridal party, or a group of friends, cabin proximity matters. Rooms fill up by category, and the good ones (side by side, same deck, connecting) go first. Waiting to book “closer to the date” almost always means your group ends up scattered across the ship.

6. Excursions book out faster than you’d think

The popular shore excursions, the ones with the best reviews and the best guides, sell out weeks in advance. If you’re planning to book once you’re onboard, you’re often choosing from what’s left. I recommend you book excursions ahead of time so you get first pick, not leftovers.

7. Onboard credit and perks are real, and most people miss them

Depending on when and how you book, there can be onboard credit, cabin upgrades, or added perks available that never show up if you book directly through a general booking site. This is one of the biggest things my clients are surprised by: the exact same cabin can come with more value depending on how it’s booked.

8. Packing for a cruise is different than packing for a resort
